Diaspora Journey Project Fall 2016

Recently we realized that our 20th anniversary is 2018!

Now is the moment to create something significant and special to celebrate.

Earlier this year I enjoyed my virgin trip to the Motherland with a visit to The Cameroon.

Douala, Bwassalo, Bafoussam, Bandjoun, Bayangam, Yaounde, Kribi, Limbe and Bimba, it was a milestone indeed.

Since then there have been visits to Cuba, Tacoma, Seattle, Martha’s Vineyard and New York.

img_4216

Over the course of these trips and many conversations, my tribe has kept me thoroughly engaged and inspired.

One especially memorable chat was with my sisterfriend Joye.

She shared with me that as travelers we do not engage in any type of retreats.

That we Sisters are forward thinkers, and therefore we travel for Advances.

The purpose of travel is for advancement.

Enlightened by this outlook, came the birth of the Diaspora Seasonal Advances 2018.

Diaspora Seasonal Advances are travel projects that explore, practice and restore African Diaspora cultural ties for Afrocentric people.

Offering intelligent, responsible African Diaspora travel in community.

We make space to enjoy culturally meaningful group travel experiences.

The 2018 Diaspora Seasonal Advance Project will happen at minimum, once per season and twice in summer.

Each Diaspora Seasonal Advance covers one region significant in African Diaspora history.

The idea is to visit fun and interesting destinations.

A few destinations where we are making plans to contribute to the conscious global vibe.

Africa – Cameroon

Caribbean – Cuba

South America – Brasil

North America – American Beach FL, Sullivan’s Island SC, Martha’s Vineyard MA.

Update with details for the 2018 Diaspora Seasonal Advances will get posted here in January 2017.

Adventurous Journeys

Ready for this next project.

Thought, care and attention to the details of this journey

Will prove a wise investment.

Participation – Boa Morte, Day 2

August 14, 2014 Boa Morte , Day 2 –

IMG_7332

The last few people were leaving the church.

After standing the entire Mass photographing the service, finally I was seated.

IMG_7334

Resting, hanging free. Everyone in my group was gone and I was seated by myself, with no true plans. The evening was still early and I was definitely not ready for another dose of the Holy-Tale. That was the name that a Sisterfriend nicknamed the Convent. Some people referred to it as a hotel, but Sisterfriend had it correct, the  Holy Tale is where our group was camped out for three nights. Best descriptive -Rustic. Nah I was not ready yet.

So like I am sitting inside the church, resting, all by myself.  Divine.

Some of the Boa Morte Sisters were entering the chapel, but at the time I still do not know that the procession was proceeding through town and would soon return to the church.

Then my gaze notices bright, attractive eye candy. A doorway, color, glass, light, form. As I often do, I instantly fell in love with this image.

Camera in hand doing my best to capture the light, beauty and elegance of the Moorish tile work surrounding the majesty of this blue doorway.  The total composition, the wood carvings on the door lights, the incandescent light accentuating the lead glass and ironwork in the oval window, the orange red marble vessel beneath the window, the shadows, the wood pews, the gold leaf, it was all amazing.

While framing the shots, my critical voice interceded with an immediate urgency, querying my rational. Why did I want a shot of these symbols of church patriarchy, dogma and doctrine, infused with Portuguese opulence?

Quietly, Divine Peace whispered this simple reminder into my ear,

“You want this shot because it is Beautiful. You appreciate the detail, design and workmanship.

African folk built all this, from thought to finish. Enjoy Darling. In this life, visual delights are paid forward. Now relax Honey, aim your camera and take your best shot”

It seems that part of the experience of making pilgrimage to Boa Morte, is the reconciliation between, Iberian colonization of the western hemisphere and the religion of lord jesus christ, as per the rulers in the Vatican.

For many traveler Sisterfriends on the journey, the big question has been and continues to be

–So Like Why are these African Diaspora women, venerating and carrying around a White Mary?

IMG_7318

The Measure: August 14, 2014
Boa Morte, Day 2 ownership Epiphany

No doubt for me, this has always been a reappearing question on my personal whisper quizzes. It’s complicated, my lineage and soul view are directly influenced by direct participation in the said colonization process.

Weighing heavily on my conscience, years ago I explored this topic extensively in the essay, Counting the Ducats: Vatican Politics, Italian Finance and the Iberian Colonization of the Atlantic World.

However it was this time in the chapel, on this rainy night in Cachoeira when I finally arrived at this moment of epiphany. Where the answers were rendered that would relieve my insistent quandary —Why?

The Measure: August 14, 2014

Well African Diaspora people praise in the church, love Jesus and carry around Mary, because their family labor and all associated rewards have been used and absorbed to build the church, the love of Jesus and the abiding support of Mary. Hallelujah! Fully recognized and acknowledged, African Blood, Sweat, Tears have been used to build it all! Our lineage is traced on the built environment. Amen, Asé, Axé!!

With this new understanding, Praise on in good conscience. African labor bought the spoils of the church, therefore it has been paid forward, African descendants own it. Give thanks! Feel it, Praise on! There is still very much to learn fundamentally about the customs, practices, traditions of the Sisterhood of Good Death. I am humbled and grateful to have begun to experience the journey.

The Measure: January 5, 2014 Everything is not always the way that it appears on the surface. For instance: An appreciation for a new rendition of a jazz standard. But after researching the artist, seeing the video and loyalty to the lyrics, I think not. Every standard is not for every artist. #Afroblue

The Measure: January 5, 2014
Surface appearances are not always what they seem.
For instance: my appreciation for a new vocal rendition of a jazz classic.
However after a closer examination of the new tune,
My loyalty to the original interpretation of the lyrics renders my initial conclusion invalid.
Ha! So does this mean that every standard is not for every artist?
Or perhaps this instance has given me an awareness that has forced me to recognize,
The distinction between a jazz standard and a nationalist anthem.
