La Habana – Santiago

Day 31 La Habana – Domingo

My body clock is still on Douala time, but I promise, it really is getting better. Slowly, surely, one day at a time I am slaying the tight grip of the jet lag beast. For instance, instead of awakening at 2:00 am EST like I did on Day 28, today I woke up at 4:00 am EST. That is two more hours, this is progress, my spirit is catching up with my body, so I have no complaints. Being optimistic, the early morning wake up has given me the opportunity to get organized, plan and complete important paperwork for the 2017 season.

Plus yesterday, the West Coast contingent arrived via commercial airlines for a 10 day maiden journey to Cuba. This cultural immersion field research project focuses on Afro Cuban Cultural Traditions, Architecture and Music in Public Spaces. On this project itinerary we will explore La Habana, journey to Santiago de Cuba for two nights visit, enjoy a day trip to Las Terrazas and Viñales, then mid week three more guests will join the fold and we will all attend the 32nd International Festival Jazz Plaza.

Although later today I might get sleepy, no worries, we are here in Cuba, we have our Festival passes, Santiago flight tickets, and we are ready to have a good time.
Bless.

Miami Layover

Day 28 – Stateside layover.

Miami = My Am I _______ fill in the blank.

Body in Miami. Spirit still in Douala.

Should be sleeping. Jet lag is a beast.

Will take a nap when I get where I am going.

Usually I say when I arrive in Miami— My am I the most beautiful woman in the world. But today I will say— My am I the most jet lagged woman in the world.

Bless!

I just came out of my clothes and crashed. Feel asleep Miami time only to wake up on Douala time. #jetlagged

Why Travel to Cuba?

Culturally, Cuba has given the world a blend of African and Latin music and art that pulses through the streets every night in Havana.  Cuba has produced major international figures in literature and fine arts, film, ballet, modern dance and theatre.

The country is also renowned for its original rhythms such as the danzón, son, bolero, mambo, cha-cha-cha and more. Cuba’s prestigious cultural events attract international celebrities in dance, music, theatre and other arts. Among these events are the Casa de las Américas literary contest, the Havana International Ballet Festival, the Festival of New Latin American Cinema and the International Jazz Festival.

Importantly, Cuba has a literacy rate and health care system that serves as a model for universal access. Education is provided free of charge at all its citizens and at all levels. In 1961, Cuba eradicated illiteracy through the National Literacy Campaign and thus now have a literacy rate higher than the U.S. Cuba’s primary health care system is considered unique. Medical services are provided free of charge to all Cubans. There is an extensive network of medical centers (442 polyclinics and 281 hospitals) designed to give free health care to even in the most remote locations and most severe cases. The infant mortality rate is 7.2 per 1000 live births and the life expectancy is 75 years both of which are higher than in the US.

Registration is open now for trips to Cuba.

Cuba Tour 2013

Cuba Tour 2013

The Measure: January 1, 2014 – Celebrating intelligent, responsible African Diaspora community travel, shifts the paradigm by exploring the borders of group travel and reconsiders the group experience as a viable, organic way to participate in a mobile interactive community. What we strive to achieve is the atmosphere of a Learning Adventure.

It is with great pride that I was able to travel through the countryside with this group of unique and brilliant souls. Yes these dedicated travelers are the hardy explorers who bravely completed the exposition and returned home safely. Perhaps a little weary, nevertheless everyone arrived back from the road to the sanctity of their own private lives, fully exposed, informed, enlightened, steadfast and all together whole, within the safety of their own fortified Selves. We followed the itinerary as best as possible. Even with a threat of the script being flipped, all of our arrangements went as planned and by the time that we successfully passed through U.S. Customs, we were truly no worse for the wear.

Collectively and individually we struck a singular and recognizable pose, posture, silhouette, stance, profile as the inquisitive African diaspora travelers. Si, we were Los Norte Americanos, that were being led by our capable and experienced On Island ambassador and tour guide, La Profesora, Sara Daisy.

It was through her contacts, knowledge and familiarity with the territory, that we were able to visit a wide range of places, where we were able to explore our understanding of how a socialist society actively operates within a global market economy that is based on the principles of capitalism. We investigated, examined, debated and explored further. Always armed with open minds, we searched for greater understanding and were rewarded with the chance to catch a glimpse, bare witness, and gain a new awareness about another view of the world.

In our every move, interaction and reaction with local customs, people and landscapes, our presence was seen, experienced and acknowledged. We covered hundreds of kilometers and all along the way, our encounters provided us with unexpected moments of engagement and opportunities to learn new ways of doing ordinary things. These encounters expanded our consciousness, while we observed different perspectives. Over the course of nearly two weeks time, we were able to do so much!  Now that we have all recuperated some and returned to our daily routine, we can finally behold the wonder of our fond memories and colorful travel stories.
